BIOGRAPHY
Sema Maşkılı was born in Edirne in 1980. The artist graduated from Istanbul Anatolian Fine Arts High School, where she received her first art education, in 1998. He graduated from Mimar Sinan University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, where she started his undergraduate education in the same year, and completed her master’s degree in painting at the same university in 2006. The artist was awarded the 2 nd prize in the competition organized by the Luxembourg Pinacotheque Museum in 2022 with the painting series “Power Causes Monsters”, which she has been working on for seven years, and in the same year, she had the” Award of Excellence for Best in Show “with one of her works in the jury-selected exhibition organized by SCA in Canada. She opened six solo shows, participated in many group exhibitions, workshops and symposiums in Turkey and abroad, and her works are in local and international private collections. The artist continues her work in her studio in Istanbul.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In her works, she questions primitive forms of behavior, considering humans as being stuck between ethical values and animal instincts. She focuses on the concept of violence and the urge for aggression, which are a part of human nature, and creates compositions consisting of bodies colliding with each other.
