DENİZ SEVİNÇLİ
2DDeniz Sevinçli is an artist born in 2000 in Istanbul, where she continues to live. She began her art education at Avni Akyol Fine Arts High School and graduated from the Painting Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2023. Starting her artistic career with illustrations and digital drawings, Sevinçli broadened her artistic perspective through a semester at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, as part of the Erasmus program in 2022. Her artwork focuses on the underwater world and fish, themes that have inspired her since childhood, exploring deepconcepts such as the quest for freedom, self-discovery, fears, and emotional struggles.
Freedom is like an unremarkable sea tower from the outside, covered in barnacles and brambles, not very eye-catching at all. But if I desire enough to pull the barbed wires away and press my ear close to its heart, I can hear the entire ocean within. The life I was born into and the name chosen for me have always drawn me to the grace of the sea. The closer I am to the sea, the more I feel certain things within me grow and strengthen. The flow of the cool water over me feels like it washes away the labels stuck to me and everything else that doesn’t belong, leaving me with my true self. This feeling, which I perceive as a journey of self-discovery akin to both a transformation and a return to one’s original self, has inspired my writings and paintings. It is like an endless marathon of escaping from reality, accompanied by the fear of an evolution that will catch you if you stop… That state of loneliness you enter when you feel estranged from yourself is like a lump in my belly. The moment you are ready to stop is the essence of true freedom. In the process of self-discovery, the steps you traverse as you delve into the depths of your being become delicate layers that build my paintings. In my compositions, my goal is to translate this effort of deep exploration and liberation onto the canvas through the underwater elements I feel most connected to and the notes I take while creating a painting
