OĞULCAN SÜRMELİ
2D, 3DOğulcan Sürmeli (Istanbul, 1995) has been concerned with perceiving his environment through painting practices since his childhood. After he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder, he received psychological support for a while. However, as it turned out, the artist simply did not allow the ordinary order to mold him. He began researching the connections between mind and behavior during his high school years. He realized that he could interpret many answers with philosophy. He won a scholarship to Işık University Faculty of Fine Arts.
The artist, who practices on "meaning" in his works, took a step towards conceptual richness after a while, thinking that canvas and paint were not enough for him. He began to specialize technically in whatever discipline he thought he could use to directly convey the connections he made regarding spirit and daily life.
After graduating, an article the artist wrote about art was published in Art Unlimited; participated in many group exhibitions and projects. He combined psychology, one of his interests, with art and worked with some clinical psychologists. Nowadays, he continues his plastic arts production in Istanbul.
Ogulcan Surmeli's various productions can be considered as the expression of the spirit. In this context, examining the loss of meaning resulting from the divine reflection of man is a fundamental issue for the artist. Sürmeli strengthens the technical infrastructure in the disciplines that can directly convey the connections it makes about spirit and daily life. Thus, it creates artistic evaluations by subjectivizing the experiences and values of the geography in which it is located and turning them into metaphors.
When studies in this direction are examined, they examine the relationship between a "thing" and its "essence" and what an image we see looks like. In other words, the fact that the loss of meaning that can be found in the works exists by adapting to the environment reveals how absurd an image that seems to be a happy utopian at first glance is. Thus, it shows us through meaning that utopia and dystopia are actually the same thing.
The artist's plastic language offers a perspective that we can metaphorically relate to the reality behind what is seen on the city streets, with issues that are indirectly prevented from being thought about. The idea is that symbolic creation can cope with institutional control.
