MELTEM ŞAHİN
4DAs an artist and designer from Turkey, I have dedicated the past decade to producing works concerning gender and women's rights. My observations regarding Western and Eastern cultures' differing perspectives on beauty have informed my artistic practice. Specifically, I have been interested in the peculiarities of the universe, the intricacies of its beauty, and the melancholy that accompanies the passage of time. My goal is to create a language that does not necessarily mirror the supposed appearances of real life, which often distances and alienates individuals from their existence. Instead, I strive to create figures with a feminist and sensitive approach that eschews hierarchies based on race, social status, sexual orientation, or any other qualifiers of beauty. Regardless of the medium, whether it be animation or installations, my works belong to a universe where neon-colored individuals floating in space invite viewers to partake in their uncanny experiences, which can elicit both pleasure and pain.
